EIGHTH ANNUAL PACIFIC HIRE MT BULLER SPRINT WILL RUN WITH YOUR SUPPORT

3rd-5th DECEMBER

The annual race to the summit of Mt Buller in Victoria’s alpine region will run, if the tarmac rally community comes to the party.

Sponsored by Pacific Hire and RDA Brakes, the 2010 Mountain Motorsports Mt Buller Sprint is open for expressions of interest to all competitors keen to make the famous run up Australia’s ‘other’ mountain.

To utilise the optimal summer alpine conditions and avoid other event conflicts, the 2010 Sprint is scheduled for the weekend of Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th December.

This is one month after the Targa High Country event run by Octagon. This earlier event is over-subscribed, forcing some would-be competitors to miss out – until now.

The Buller Sprint still covers the famous sixteen kilometre road from the foot of Mt Buller to the resort centre on top of the mountain. With more than 132 different corners separated by short bursts of straight and cambered tarmac, the full sprint is arguably Australia’s premier hillclimb and draws competitors from all over the country to its tricky tarmac.

The Targa High Country event only utilizes a shorter uphill section of the 16km Buller tourist road for two special stages, and ranges to the north and south for the remainder of the rally.

The established Pacific Hire Mt Buller Sprint promises a minimum of 10 runs, all the way to the mountain’s summit. Many previous competitors have claimed the top section is what makes Mt Buller unique, coming up through the village in front of the spectators, friends, families and fellow competitors. The close proximity of the event also gives interstate competitors the chance to return to the mountain without the time-consuming and costly journey. Please drop a line to Mountain Motorsports for storage solutions at Mt Buller and Mansfield between the two events if this is of interest.

The 2010 Mt Buller Sprint is open to both Classic cars (pre-1982) and Modern cars (1982 onwards), ensuring a great mix of motoring metal.

Also available is the ‘Demonstration Class’, where competitors with modified vehicles can still participate in the event, but their times won’t appear on the official time sheets and final outright results.

Day One, Friday December 3, kicks off the weekend with a shakedown utilising the final 2.5km of the full course to enable driver and navigator to get a feel for this unique road. This will be followed by two full runs up the tourist road in its entirety.

Over Saturday and Sunday, the teams have a minimum of eight full runs to hone their skills and shave their times, with the worst run dropped in final results to tighten the competition even further.

The entry fee for the 2010 Mt Buller Sprint is $2750 including all insurance and competition fees.

Mountain Motorsports is also offering a thoroughbred touring category, allowing enthusiasts in non-rollcaged cars to sweep up the mountain in closed-road conditions. Touring competitors will travel behind the swift pace car twice each day of the rally, then park at the Classic Car Show in the heart of the Mt Buller village and watch the competition cars come through the village.

The affordable and fun Touring section costs only $450, and includes a AASA licensing permit and insurance, official car signage, Mt Buller Sprint merchandise, and entry to all official rally functions and the Sprint’s famous social scene. An AASA Club Licence for the Tour will cost $50 and can be purchased when you arrive at Mt Buller.

Please complete the Expression of Interest form (attached), and return it to Mountain Motorsports no later than Tuesday, 31st August for the event committee to ensure the event’s survival.

Remember, the event cannot run without the support of the rally community. Be sure to get your EOI forms in soon, and keep the Mt Buller Sprint motoring.

JOIN THE ACTION - SEPTEMBER 18 & 19

Mixing the thrill of competition with the fun of open-road driving, the 2010 Figjam Rally guarantees a full weekend of four-wheeled thrills for any motoring enthusiast.

Brought to you by Mountain Motorsports, the national authority in navigational road events, the Figjam Rally follows the success of the recent San Remo Rally in offering car owners the chance to test their metal in circuit-based autotests and through road-based point-to-point navigation.

Based in Bendigo through the weekend of September 18 – 19, the rally covers around 500kms of roads and approximately 20 driving tests repeated over the two-day duration.

Competitors tour via navigation to the DECA driver training centre in Shepparton and stock up on lunch before an afternoon of autotests on the track and skidpan for both driver and co-driver. The field then moves to the Cellar 47 restaurant before a night navigation back to the bar in Bendigo for a few social drinks. Sunday will see competitors start with a navigation to lunch, where more autotests await before a final short liason to the official trophy presentation and celebrations.

You do not need to have navigated or driven on tracks before, and a roll-caged rally car is not required. Just $750.00 allows both driver and navigator entry into the event, and it includes meals, maps and route instructions, event insurance and trophies. An Australian Auto Sport Alliance (AASA) club licence is all that’s required by both driver and navigator, and they can be purchased for $50 on arrival.

This is a great opportunity for first-timers to come away for the weekend and mingle with like-minded people while ‘having a crack’ in a safe environment.

For those that want an even more relaxed weekend with the thrill of the driving tests, the Figjam Rally introduces a new Touring section, which includes all meals and the autotests, but without the need to calculate the route and navigate. Instead, Touring competitors will drive a predetermined mapped route to each of the events and functions, providing a great first-timers introduction to the world of road rally, or for those wanting a more relaxed experience.

Just bring your sense of adventure and be ready for lots of fun, as socialising is a large component of our events.

2010 FIGJAM RALLY - SEPTEMBER 18 & 19

Based in Bendigo, this follow-up to the recent San Remo event is sure to go down as one not to be missed. We are introducing a Touring Section for the event, specifically for competitors that want to drive on some great roads without stress. And you get to compete in all of the driving tests

Saturday morning will see a navigation to DECA for lunch, followed by an afternoon full of action. Competitors will get numerous runs over several autotests, and both driver and navigator get a chance to compare their times (if the driver is willing to hand over the wheel). After a complimentary dinner in Shepparton at Cellar 47, the ‘Night Nav’ will get you back to the bar in Bendigo for a few social drinks should you find yourselves a little thirsty.

Sunday will see competitors start with a navigation to lunch, where lots more autotests await.... After lunch, a short nav will get you to the presentation function so you can collect your trophies.

All you need is a car (no cage required), helmets, and an AASA club licence each ($50). This is a great opportunity for first-timers to come away for the weekend and mingle with like-minded people while ‘having a crack’ in a safe environment.

The total distance of the event will be approx 500kms and will feature about 20 driving tests, which you will get to run numerous times.

Just bring your sense of adventure and be ready for lots of fun, as socialising is a large component of our events.

2010 SAN REMO RALLY - WHERE THE ROAD REALLY OPENS UP...

For anyone daring to dream of an event with open road driving and    navigation, exciting autotests, a challenging night navigation, and a    fantastic social scene, the new Mountain Motorsports run ‘San    Remo Rally’ is now a reality.

The inaugural event will be based in San Remo, about an hour south    of Melbourne, and will utilise the beautiful roads and asphalt of the    Bass Coast region of Victoria.

Run across the weekend of April 24-25, the rally will combine open road driving and navigation across both days and into the evening of the Saturday night. The Sunday night will prove equally challenging to the social butterfly!

You do not need to be a professional driver or navigator to tackle the course, and best of all, you do not require a roll-caged rally car.

The event caters for the first-time rally novice wanting to try their hand at motorsport, through to the experienced motoring enthusiast, and at a fraction of the cost of a typical tarmac rally.

Just $480.00 allows both driver and navigator entry into the event. This fee includes AASA insurance, all maps and route instructions, lunch on both days and trophies. An Australian Auto Sport Alliance (AASA) club licence is all that’s required by both driver and navigator, and they can be purchased when you sign-in for the event.

Mountain Motorsports specialises in road-based rally events, and boasts more than 15 years experience in running and competing in Touring Road Events including the Mt Buller Sprint, Lake Mountain Sprint, Indy Rally, Grand Prix Rally, Hawks Rally and many more.

Entries will be open until April 21, so be quick!

LAKE MOUNTAIN SPRINT WRAP-UP

An epic all-wheel-drive battle for the 2010 Lake Mountain Sprint podium    has been fought and won by the White Hot Lamborghini Gallardo of    nephew-uncle combo Jason and John White, only seconds ahead of    Steve Jones and Ben Searcy in their LF performance Nissan R35 GT-R.

The return of Mountain Motorsports’ annual Lake Mountain Sprint has been    hailed an overwhelming success from all involved, with the technical 10km    road and intermittent ambient temperatures and weather challenging both human and mechanical competitors.

The rally road has been forever changed by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, which levelled the rally base’s town of Marysville and the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and forced the cancellation of last year’s annual event.

However, the community and its surrounding suburbs are working hard to rebuild what was lost, and the fast-paced mountain road now mixes blackened tree stumps with new green undergrowth. Though a few competitors ended up parked in the latter, the two-day event saw no major injuries.

As always, the unpredictable mountain road gave spectators at the start line a thrill, with many losing traction on the first series of corners.

The infamously slippery first turn claimed Ray Vandersee’s supercharged Skelta G-Force among many others. Though he and co-driver Cameron Reeves retired before they could impact on the results board, but the pair promise to be in sizzling form at round four of the championship with a third-fastest time up the mountain.

Classic category contender Kevin Weeks suffered gearbox failure on the seventh special stage of the rally. He missed out on stages 8 & 9 and thanks to the last-minute efforts of his team to get the car started again, he managed to start the 10th and final stage of the event, and be classified as a finisher.

This allowed competitor Bill Pye and Grant Geelan’s 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera to take the classic car win, and elevated the Showroom-spec Mitsubishi Evolution IX of Tony Warren and Natasha Denise to third outright and first in Showroom ahead of Dean Evans and Naomi Tillett in a TMR Evolution X. Ralph Merkel and Murray Slana followed in an Evo IX.

Limited mods classic cars was won by John Ireland and David Pattersen’s Porsche Carrera 3, the small-capacity Early Modern category was won by Gary Morgan and Kingsley Smith in a Subaru Legacy RSR, and the 3501 To 4500cc class was taken out by Maher Algadri and Toni Feaver in an ex-Jim Richards Porsche.

The Early Modern 2501 – 4500cc ‘Evo’ category was decisively won by new rally competitor Adam Newton and codriver Daniel Lemish in a Mitsubishi Evolution IV, who also finished the weekend in sixth place. All-girl team Samantha Stevens and Claire Ryan mastered a minor mechanical gremlin in their Evo VI to take second on the final run.

In the sub-4500cc Modern class, Stephen Bradford and Andrew Chudleigh took first place and fifth outright despite a frightening triple 360-degree spin and resulting suspension damage hobbling their final runs.

The popular Musclecar category was won by Tim Hendy and Joanne Sibley took out the win and fourth outright for the weekend in the sonorous Daytona Coupe, and Early Musclecar was claimed by TV personality Glenn Ridge and Bob Edwards.

Jason and John White clocked up a 4501cc-plus class victory, the outright win, and still lead the modern championship ahead of Jones and Searcy. Dan and Nathalie Ford in a LHD Chevrolet Corvette Z06 are third going into the final round of the four-series championship, Targa Tasmania, at the end of April.

Second place outright goes to Steve Jones and    Ben Searcy from WA in their 2008 Nissan Skyline    GTR R35 with a total time of 39m53.81.

Third place goes to Tony Warren and Natasha    Deniese in their 2006 Mitsubishi EVO 9, with a    total Outright time of 42m18.17.

HANKOOK EVO X TO DEBUT AT LAKE MOUNTAIN SPRINT

Tarmac rally specialist Dean Evans will partner with    Hankook Competition Australia (HCA) in the 2010    Australian Tarmac Championship as part of the company's    motorsport development and ambassador program.

The debut of the car in Hankook colours will happen at this    weekend’s Lake Mountain Sprint, round three of the    Championship.

Evans and co-driver Simone Bachmann have a commanding    lead in the Showroom class of the championship going into    this weekend's third round, the Lake Mountain Sprint in    Victoria. With Bachmann absent due to work commitment,    Targa Tasmania 2009 champion co-driver Naomi Tillett will    join Evans for this weekend’s assault on the mountain. “Simone’s out for this event, but it’s great to have someone like Naomi aboard, given her regular driver Tony Quinn isn’t entered at Lake Mountain. At least she won’t have to deal with kibble rattling around the cabin this weekend.”

Evans will compete on Hankook tyres at Lake Mountain and at the final round of the championship - Targa Tasmania.

"We'll be using Hankook's new Ventus TD tyre, which has already shown it has potential by scoring fourth outright on Australian debut at the Bathurst 12 Hour race last month," said Evans.

"Our role will be to give Hankook feedback on the tyre as part of its motorsport development program."

Ventus TD is a road-legal R-spec tyre featuring compound and construction technology developed in the Japan Super GT and European Le Mans series.

"We recently tested the Hankooks and, without revealing times, they definitely boosted our confidence," Evans said.

“This weekend at Lake Mountain will be a good test, and as Targa Tasmania in particular is hugely demanding on tyres, so the performance data gathered there will be valuable to Hankook."

After finishing 12th outright in a Lotus Exige at Targa last year, Evans switched to a Team Mitsubishi Ralliart-built Evo X Club Spec SST for the inaugural ATC.

At the opening Mt Buller Sprint round last December, the new Evans/Bachmann TMR Evo dominated the Showroom class and finished tenth outright.

The pair also performed strongly at Targa Wrest Point in January, finishing second to experienced locals Tony Warren and Natasha Deniese in an Evo IX, by a margin of just 0.1 sec per kilometre.

Evans says his Hankook Evo X will undergo further development within the Showroom class rules between now and Targa Tasmania in late April.

"Our goal is nothing less than the Showroom win at Targa and the ATC - and we'd like to crack into the outright top 10 at Targa. We have the car, we have the tyres, now the onus is on me. Better get to the gym!"

   2010 SAN REMO RALLY

   APRIL 24th - 25th, 2010

Mountain Motorsports are pleased to announce the inaugural San    Remo Rally to be run in the Bass Coast region of Victoria and based in    San Remo.

This 2 day event will consist of navigation sections plus driving tests on both days and is open to all vehicles.

If your idea of a perfect weekend is a spirited drive through beautiful countryside, over some excellent sealed bitumen roads in your special motor car, socializing with like minded people, then this is just the sort of medicine you need.

For only $480.00 it’s a great way for owners to enjoy their pride and joy, however, there is a serious side to the weekend as navigators have their heads down as they map their way over some real driver’s roads.

2010 EVENT INFO

2010 LAKE MOUNTAIN SPRINT

The Sprint returns to Marysville and the alpine resort of Lake Mountain after a two-year hiatus as Round Three of the Australian Tarmac Championship.

As you all well know, the Black Saturday bushfires almost wiped these two stunning ares clean off the map: but the town and tourist road are rebuilt, and the Lake Mountain Sprint is resurrected!

It’s a fast blast up the 10km mountain road to the summit, with competitors promised a minimum of 10 timed runs over the weekend.

The two-day event will also produce some much needed tourist dollars and support for the local community, which has slowly rebuilt its infrastructure over the past year. Around 50 houses in Marysville have been reconstructed, along with the café, service station, bakery, supermarket and post office, and there is still accommodation available in the town and neighboring suburbs.

With less than 4 weeks to go until the event kicks off on March 20 and 21, there are still a limited number of entries remaining for the Sprint and for the Tour.

ROUND 3 OF THE AUSTRALIAN TARMAC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lake Mountain Sprint tarmac rally will return to the mountain of its moniker at the end of March, bringing more than just exotic cars and exciting action to the twisting tarmac. The two-day event will also produce some much needed tourist dollars and support for the fire-ravaged community of Marysville and the alpine resort of Lake Mountain, which was all but destroyed in the Black Saturday inferno.

Those catastrophic fires on Saturday February 7th, 2009 forced the cancellation of the 2009 Mountain Motorsports event. However, the local community, which thrived on tourism as its main income, is excited about the prospect of visitors – and rally cars – returning to the town in 2010.

“What a great way for the Tarmac Rallying Community to support the fire affected businesses in the Murrundindi Shire,” commented Peter Washington from Mountain Motorsports. “It will also be the third round (of four) in the Australian Tarmac Championship, and give crews the opportunity to gain valuable points before they head to Targa in April,” he added.

Mountain Motorsports will be taking a collection from all of its competitors and officials and be giving the money raised to the local community.

“Come and see what we have to offer and where we are at with the recovery effort,” said Trudi Ackerman, Marketing Manager at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. “We are really looking forward to the buzz of Australia’s top tarmac rally drivers at full noise on our usually quiet country road again.”

The 2010 Lake Mountain Motorsports Sprint Launch will be held at the Lake Mountain Resort atop Lake Mountain on February 15th. All competitors are invited to attend.

The Lake Mountain Sprint will be run over two days on March 20 and 21, with a minimum of 10 timed runs up the 10km tourist road.

ONE MOUNTAIN DOWN, MT BULLER TO GO!

Just 50 days until round one of the Australian Tarmac Championship.

With the Bathurst 1000 run for another year, attention now turns to the other great mountain motorsport event, the seventh annual Mt Buller Sprint tarmac hillclimb. Australia’s largest, longest and premier hillclimb attracts some of Australia’s best and emerging drivers, including two-time winner Jim Richards, Bathurst winner Tony Longhurst, WRC runner Alister McRae, ARC gun Dean Herridge, V8 Supercar driver/TV personality Grant Denyer and 2008 Mt Buller Sprint champion and V8 Ute driver George Miedecke.

WRC driver Alister McRae will make his first visit the Mt Buller, as will fellow WA driver Steve Jones, fresh from his Targa West victory.

It promises to be tight at the top, with Kevin Weeks looking to debut his ‘new’ Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, after his crash at Targa Tasmania in April. And he has promised it will be faster than before.

The Mt Buller Sprint is set to be the biggest ever in 2009, being the first round of the new Australia Tarmac Championship, and offering the Tarmac magazine Sub-9 Club award.

Open to all modern and classic tarmac rally cars, the newly formed Australian Tarmac Championship, underwritten by the AASA, is a four-round series that includes Mt Buller, Targa Wrest Point, Lake Mountain Sprint and culminates at Targa Tasmania in April.

The Mt Buller Sprint course runs 16.1km from the base of the mountain, climbing through 132 turns before finishing at the spectacular Mt Buller alpine village, where spectators can get close to the cars and drivers.

The AASA Australian Tarmac Championship is set to provide a boost to the already booming sport of tarmac rallying, with a prize pool totalling $30,000 of awards. Entrants into the Mt Buller Sprint are automatically eligible into the Australian Tarmac Championship, where entrants competing in all four events can drop their worst round.

Launched in 2008 as a bonus for fast entrants, Tarmac magazine’s Sub-9 Club is for the first eight teams that break into the eight-minute barrier: with six places taken in last years event, the award will be a ‘first to run the time wins the award’ for 2009, putting a twist on prologue qualification, with all cars running in reverse order. The Mt Buller Sprint starts in northeast Victoria’s alpine region on December 4.

Entries are limited and already approaching 100 with entries closing soon, so to secure your place call Tim McNeilly (0401 905 777)

STAKE YOUR PLACE IN RALLY HISTORY AT MT BULLER
Heavens to murgatroid - Don’t miss out – get your entry in NOW!!!!!

There are only three months left until the sixth running of the 2009 Mt Buller Sprint on December 4 - 6, and already over 80% of the 100-capacity field have claimed their place in the annual race to the summit.

Run over a sixteen kilometre closed road from the foot of Mt Buller in north-east Victoria to the Resort township on the mountain’s peak, the course contains more than 132 different corners separated by short bursts of straight and cambered tarmac, all taken under tyre in less than 10 minutes.

The Mt Buller Sprint is open to both Classic cars (pre-1982) and Modern cars (1982 onwards), ensuring a great mix of different rally and race cars making the climb every year.

This year’s entries so far include cars such as the Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 RSRs and 996 Turbos, classic and modern Holden and Ford V8s such as the Capri Perana and LJ Torana, American muscle like the Corvette Z06, a gaggle of Nissan, Subaru and Mitsubishi AWD saloons, and even a Mazda3 Diesel.

Some of the fastest cars to tackle the mountain have already gained entry to the exclusive ‘Sub-Nine Club’. Sponsored by TARMAC Magazine, only two of the ten trophies symbolising entry to this exclusive league of speedsters remain up for grabs this year.

This year, the sprint moves from the Melbourne Cup long weekend to Friday 4th – Sunday 6th December to make use of optimal summer alpine conditions and avoid other event conflicts. Day one, Friday December 4, kicks off the weekend with a shakedown and prologue utilising the final 2.5km of the full course to enable competitors to get a feel for this unique road.

Over Saturday and Sunday, the drivers have a minimum of four full runs each day to hone their skills and shave their times, with the worst run dropped in final results to tighten the competition even further. Last year, efficient time management and tireless work by the Sprint’s dedicated officials enabled 11 stages to be run over two days, to the delight of spectators and competitors alike.

And for the first time in Mt Buller Sprint history, a new thoroughbred touring section will offer enthusiasts the chance to experience the fabulous Summit Road in their own road car inlosed-stage rally conditions. Touring competitors will travel behind the swift pace car twice each day of the rally, then park at the Classic Car Show in the heart of the Mt Buller village and watch the competition cars come through.

The Touring section is open for 30 entrants and standard road cars for the bargain price of $350, which includes a AASA licensing permit and insurance, official car signage, and entry to all official rally functions and the Sprint’s famous social scene. All you need to bring is your helmet.

Don’t miss out on your piece of the rally scene and stunning mountain scenery that is the Mt Buller Sprint – enter now! Secure your entry by emailing Tim McNeilly: tim@mountainmotorsports.com.au

PIKES PEAK REPORT
Recently Tim attended the Pike's Peak Hillclimb in Colorado - our sister event.

'The Event blew me away... I couldn't believe the scale of it. The road is amazing. It goes from tarmac to dirt, to tarmac and finishes on dirt. In the next few years the entire road is being sealed, which will guarantee that the current record (10:01.4 seconds) will be smashed by a minute or so. Marcus Gronholm was competing in a Fiesta and the event was won by 'Monster' Tajima. I'm going back next year and am looking for a few extras to join me who want to experience Pike's Peak first hand or who would like to compete in the future......'

LAKE MOUNTAIN UPDATE
We are pleased to announce that the next running of the Lake Mountain Sprint will be held at the end of March 2010.

Most of the infrastructure at Lake Mountain was destroyed in the fires and the rebuilding program should be completed over the summer months. After the devastation of the Black Saturday bushfires and the resulting damage to infrastructure, accommodation in Marysville is virtually nonexistent and as such we have organised accommodation in surrounding areas. The local community is keen to host the event again and we are looking forward to supporting the businesses affected by the bushfires in and around Marysville.

Please pencil this into your diary as we will be limiting entry numbers would love to see all of you up there.
