AASA CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS UP!

The next round of The AASA Australian Tarmac Rally Championship, the inaugural Snowy River Sprint on the weekend of May 26 – 27, is set to be an absolute cracker, with the championships in each category still wide open.

The Classic category is currently led by Keith Morling and son Alex in an Escort, while Dave Pitman and Jodee Lee currently lead the 2WD class in a Ford Falcon F6, with the Showroom class led by Clinton Arentz and Peter Burrey who also lead the post-2005 all-paw cars in an Evo X.

The 4WD standings are headed by Samantha Stevens and Bernie Webb in the pre-2005 category (Evo VI) Samantha also leads the outright championship after winning round one, the inaugural Mt Baw Baw Sprint in February.

The Snowy River Sprint will feature 20 stages and 295km of competitive kilometres over two days, on the roads around the holiday destination of Lakes Entrance.

The stage maps as well as reconnaissance information are now available.

Great value entry fees with the entry for Modern cars only $2,650, which works out at $8.99 per competitive kilometre with Classic entrants enjoying an entry fee of $2,200, or $7.46 per km, while the touring category for cars without roll-cages – but with full access to closed-road special stages – only $600.

Mountain Motorsports has also set the course for round three of the Championship, the North East Rally, on August 10 – 12.

It will be a shorter rally with approximately 150 competitive kilometres over the weekend, starting in Lilydale, travelling through Alexandra, and finishing with lunch at the Festival of Speed event at Winton Raceway on the Sunday. The Festival will give all drivers a chance to mingle with other car nuts at the rally's conclusion, with a Mountain Motorsports corporate area and trophy presentation at Winton being a highlight of the event.

Even better, the North East Rally will only cost $1800 to enter, making it arguably the best value rally in the country.

NEXT MONTH'S SNOWY RIVER SPRINT IS GO!

The next instalment of The Australian Tarmac Rally Championship is fast approaching, with the inaugural Snowy River Sprint set for the weekend of May 26 – 27.

The second round of the four-part national championship will pit competitors against the forest roads around coastal holiday destination of Lakes Entrance, with a massive 295km of competitive kilometres over the two days. This promises to be one of the great tarmac rallies in Australia, with twenty stages on brand new roads with short liaison distances in between to save fuel and tyres and prevent fatigue. The rally stage start is only 1.5km from the service park.

The short liaisons and tightly-packed field ensure a full day's racing each leg – and promises great value for money.

The entry fee for Modern cars set at just $2,650, which works out at $8.99 per competitive kilometre – arguably the best value tarmac rally in the country. Even more so for Classic entrants, with an entry fee of $2,200 working out to $7.46 per km! No other tarmac rally in Oz can match it.

And finally, for those without a dedicated, rollcaged race car, the Tour category allows the average punter with a license in any street car, daily driver or that special car that is usually confined to the racetrack or garage the same 20 special stage privileges as the competition cars, to enjoy the freedom of a closed road all to themselves. For just $600, you can take a partner, share the drive, or even give the entry as a gift to a car-mad friend or family member.

The Lakes Entrance area has a vast array of accommodation to suit any budget, and is situated just four hours from Melbourne and eight hours' drive from Sydney. The rally will be based out of the Central Hotel, and a cocktail party followed by a live band will be held on the Saturday evening. Recce information is now available, and the start and finish points of each stage have been marked on the tarmac to make the process easier for competitors.

The event is the second round of the four-round AASA Australian Tarmac Rally Championship, and will include 295km of competitive kilometres, with minimal liaison distances between stages. The multi stage rally is designed to make it as easy as possible for the crews, in time, wear and tear on the car, and ultimately on the wallet.

FIRST LADY TAKES TOP SPOT IN 2012 ATC

IN A SERIES of firsts, the Mitsubishi Evo VI of Samantha Stevens and co-driver Bernie Webb has taken the lead in the 2012 Australian Tarmac Rally Championship with a decisive win in wet conditions at the Mt Baw Baw Sprint – the first time a female has won a national tarmac rally.

The inaugural Mt Baw Baw Sprint rally – the first round of four in the AASA national series - saw a small but prestigious field of cars line up on February 11-12 for multiple runs up the twisting 16km tarmac access road from the base of the mountain to the Baw Baw resort at its summit.

Samantha, who won the Australian Tarmac Championship for Early Modern cars in 2010, has until now danced on the edge of a win with consistent top-five finishes in a short three-year driving career. But this time, she and co-driver Bernie Webb took the 13-year-old car to the top spot on the outright table with consistently fast times in wet conditions.

“I went to the Baw Baw Sprint hoping to develop both my driving skills and a better suspension setup on the ‘Behind The Drive’ Evo - and of course to have some fun - but I never dared dream an outright win was possible!” said Samantha.

“We took some risks, changing springs overnight and dialing the car in and out, but Bernie is a master of both car setup and of keeping a hot-headed driver under control, and we kept improving over time.”
As the rain and fog set in on the mountain, Samantha and Bernie won all but one stage on day two, pulling up to 30 seconds on their nearest competitor.

“My forte is in the wet – both myself and my car are not as speedy as some of my incredibly quick peers when the conditions are dry and fast – yet,” she added. ‘But in the wet with all-wheel grip and commitment to the notes, we plugged away and came out with a surprise win. It’s a shame that the leading Evo IX of Danny Traverso slipped off the road in torrential rain on the final run. But a win is a win, and we’ll take it.”
Top contenders Traverso and Andrew Richmond (Nissan R35) both found their car’s limits on the tricky Baw Baw tourist road, ending up in the fern fronds. Neither were hurt. Meanwhile, early race leader Dave Scott (Subaru WRX) retired with a mechanical problem.

Samantha is also leading the AASA Australian Tarmac Rally Championship; another first for a female. But when asked about her status as Australia’s first female to top a national rally, she said: “It’s not about gender; its about teamwork, persistence, and guts. While it’s fabulous to have such an honour of being the first girl to top the tables, I’m still surprised that it has taken this long. I was Bernie’s 30th driver, but his first female. There should be more women taking up the wheel.

“Rally is such an amazing sport; the mateship and help on hand is wonderful. I would not have finished the rally had my fellow competitors not lent me parts when my camber bolts stripped, or push-started my car when it decided to play dead. It is such an equal playing field. The only balls you need are metaphoric!”
The championship continues on May 25 – 27 with the multi-stage Snowy River Sprint, before the Northeast Tarmac Rally on August 10 - 12, and the Lake Mountain Sprint on November 24 – 25.

TELEVISION COVERAGE FOR THE MT BAW BAW SPRINT

Dave Scott and Hollis Scott Racing have just concluded a big day, finalising a last minute deal to televise and compete in the Mountain Motorsports Australian Tarmac Rally Championship for 2012.

"It‟s exciting for us to be able to announce the TV and sponsorship package today. It is through the support of many new and loyal friends that we can contest all rounds of the ATRC," Scott said. "To be able to contest the entire Australian Tarmac Rally Championship series is a real bonus for us".

The exciting announcement from Hollis Scott Racing means there will be a professional film crew on the mountain for three days from Friday to Sunday, tracking the efforts of Dave and his team as well as their competitors.

"It‟s been a real stretch to pull this together in such a short time, and I‟d like to thank PerFOURmance Motorsports, Fulcrum Suspension, and Peter Washington and the crew at Mountain Motorsports for their assistance in making this happen."

Scott added "The film crew would like to interview all competitors in the championship so please make yourself known to anyone in the Hollis Scott team if you would like to be involved. We will endeavour to let everyone know where the cameras will be on each stage so you can put your driving skills on show." Hollis Scott Racing consists of PerFOURmance Motorsports, Fulcrum Suspension, David Scott - Driver, Michelle Berardo - Navigator, Robin Berardo - Chief Mechanical Engineer, Gary McPhillips - Mechanical Engineer, Sue Scott - Administration, and the ProCam Broadcast Hire team.

The Australian Tarmac Rally Championship kicks off this coming weekend, the 11th and 12th of February, with the inaugural Mt Baw Baw sprint: an edge-of-your-seat, seriously steep climb winding up what looks like the best piece of mountain road in the Victorian Ski fields. It is the perfect opener to the Australian Championship with its challenging road scaled twelve times over the weekend, giving crews a chance to get their eye in ahead of the subsequent multi-stage events.

LAKE MOUNTAIN SPRINT WRAP & SERIES UPDATE

The 2011 Lake Mountain Sprint tarmac rally has been run and won, with the 2010 Pikes Peak class-winning Evo VIII of Sydney couple Jeff Denmeade and Catherine Hammond taking home the spoils. The pair beat out Danny Traverso and Matt Kopcheff, with Steve Spada and Christine Condon taking third outright.

Through ever-changing weather conditions ranging from fog to sleeting rain on day one, to sun and heat on day two, the November 26-27 event saw the entire field manage to tame the mountain unscathed, with only Tim Hendy and Joanne Sibley suffering a minor brake failure – managing to stop the car, but stopping their assault on the mountain.

It was a long-awaited and exciting return of the Marysville-based alpine rally event, which is set to run next year as the final closer of next year's four-round 2012 Australian Tarmac Rally Championship.

It begins in just over two month's time in mid February with the inaugural Mt Baw Baw Sprint, tackling the winding 15.95km access road to the summit of Mt Baw Baw for 12 runs, or 190 competitive kilometres, over the weekend of February 11 – 12.  It costs only $1,800 to enter.

Two more new, multi-stage events follow through out the year: the Snowy River Sprint on May 25 – 27, and the North East Tarmac Rally on August 10 – 12.

The Lake Mountain Sprint is again scheduled for the last weekend of November (24 – 25). Even better, competitors that enter the first three rounds of the 2012 Championship the entry fee for the last round will be half price.

The winners of the Championship will rightly be known as the best tarmac rallying teams in the country. Combining the four unique events will provide an exciting challenge for all crews, no matter what car they compete in. The series will see separate titles for classic and modern cars, and all entries at all events will be automatically entered into the ATRC at no extra charge.

No rollcage? No problem. Enter the Touring category at each rally, and be a part of the action in your standard road car.

With only two months to go, the Baw Baw Sprint is already heating up. The fantastic facilities and on-site accommodation at Mt Baw Baw will suit all tastes and budgets, and the Sprint Bar, open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will ensure the rally is a real social event, as are all Mountain Motorsports rallies. So get your entries in now, and be a part of Australia's AASA Tarmac Rally national championship!

You said it, and we listened… The inaugural Mt Baw Baw Sprint, a brand new rally based just 150kms from Melbourne, will now run as a multi-stage rally when it pits horsepower against tar for the first time on April 30 & May 1.

Originally planned as a traditional base-to-summit sprint, the Mountain Motorsports event will now offer numerous runs over five different roads and around 180 competitive kilometres.

That’s not the only thing that’s competitive – the Entry Fee remains the same at just $1950.

Entrants will have the precipitous, windy road to the summit of Mt Baw Baw all to themselves for eight runs over the weekend, plus four additional sections of tarmac that surround the alpine slopes to use over the weekend (Further information about the new, additional stages will be available very shortly).

The 10.66km access road to the Baw Baw summit is a very challenging, and steeper climb than any other mountain resort road in Australia. It features numerous hairpins and tight turns - Click HERE to see YouTube footage of the Mt Baw Baw Stage.

On both days of the event the field will be split in two, with one group tackling the Baw Baw road in the morning, while the other half of the competitors test themselves on the new roads before a blast up the Baw Baw road to lunch. In the afternoon the groups will swap.

Awards will be presented for both Modern and Classic cars, as well as awards for the fastest run overall up the Baw Baw road in Modern and Classic.

Non-rollcaged cars and their owners also have the chance to challenge the mountain and open up their throttles in the Touring category.

The mountain is less than two hours from Melbourne, making it the Victorian capital’s most accessible ski mountain - and rally. The fantastic facilities and on-site accommodation will suit all tastes and budgets, and the Sprint Bar, open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will ensure the rally is a real social spectacular both day and night. GOODBYE MT BULLER SPRINT...HELLO TWO NEW EVENTS

After six years of success, the Mt Buller Sprint, has called it a day. But other mountains await in 2011…

The inaugural Targa High Country event run by Octagon, scheduled to run one month prior to the annual Sprint, has seen a sharp drop in competitor entries. With both rallies utilising the same piece of road in such close proximity, and the newly-established championship run by the same outfit, Mt Buller Sprint organisers Mountain Motorsports simply could not take the risk of running the event with the current numbers.

Mountain Motorsports wishes the Targa High Country event and its competitors all the best, and thanks the continued support of Pacific Hire and RDA Brakes, Racesolutions Motorsport, the volunteers and officials, and the hundreds of competitors who have made the past six years possible.

From the ashes of the Mt Buller Sprint will rise a brand new event, free of any conflicts of calendar and location in 2011.

The proposed Mt Baw Baw Sprint, now delayed until late April 2011, will preclude an exciting new rally in the Victorian alpine region.

The event, in the early stages of development, will invite both Classic cars (pre-1982) and Modern cars (1982 onwards) to taste over 200 competitive kilometres of challenging mountain roads, linked by short liaisons and a wicked social scene, both by day and by night.

More details will be released towards the end of 2010.
